Summary: This document expresses the necessity for Catholics to remain united under the umbrella of a political party that represents Catholic values during the congressional elections. It is a direct critique of liberal ideologies and asks Catholic parishioners to protest anti-Catholic legislation, such as the recognition of civil marriage.
Historical Notes: During the mid 19th century the Conservative and Liberal political parties emerged in Nueva Granada. The Liberal party promoted the commercial use of land, and minimizing the role of state control of the market. The Liberal party opposed the power of the Catholic Church, including the privileges the church held concerning the accumulation of land and its influence over the formal education system (337). The Catholic Church at this time was aligned with the Conservative party. This was in part to protect its private property, and to protect its position in the social hierarchy of power that was being threatened by Liberal proposals of secularism (343).
