Summary: This document is a Civil Code for Nueva Granada, proposed by jurist Justo Arosemena, representative of the Panamá province to the House of Representatives. It is divided into two sections: Book One “On the Family” which refers to civil law, and Book Two “On Property” which is related to private property and commercial law.
Historical Notes: After Independence, Nueva Granada initiated a process to separate its civil and penal codes, (taking the French Napoleonic code as its model). In 1873 a civil code was adopted, and this same code is still operative with the exception of substantial modifications to matrimonial provisions. Davis, Robert 1993 Law.
