Summary: This pamphlet is a response to a publication in the newspaper El Cachaco that concerned religious tolerance (particularly of Protestant Churches). The text calls upon religious authorities and the public to be aware of the dangers that secular politics pose to the authority of the Catholic Church.
Historical Notes: During the mid-19th century the Conservative and Liberal political parties become known in Nueva Granada. The Liberal party opposed the power of the Catholic Church, including the privileges the church held concerning the accumulation of profits and land and its influence over education (337). The Catholic Church was aligned with the Conservative party in part to protect its property and its position in the social hierarchy of power that was being threatened by Liberal proposals of secularism (343). Tirado Mejía, Álvaro 1982 El Estado y la Política en el Siglo XIX. In Manual de Historia de Colombia. J.G. Cobo Borda and S. Mutis Durán, eds. Pp. 327-383. Bogotá: Procultura.
Donor Notes: A strong response to a line in the Cachaco de Bogotá, número 56 (of 6 April, 1834) which called for complete religious tolerance in New Granada. The writer of El Gosque rejected such tolerance as being anti-Roman Catholic. - J.L.H.
