Summary: In this document the lawyer who represents the Antioquia Railway Company presents documents that prove the legitimate acquisition of the land of the Isla de Manzanillo. This was in response to a lawsuit initiated by Nueva Granada’s Attorney General. The government argued that only part of the land could be legally used for the railroad and the rest should have been returned to the nation.
Historical Notes: The Panamá railroad was the first transcontinental railroad built in the Western hemisphere. It connected Colon on the Atlantic coast with Panamá City on the Pacific coast. The construction took place between 1850 and 1855 by the American company, the Panamá Railroad Co. The Panamá railroad was the first to be built in Nueva Granada and greatly improved commerce. It was eventually sold to the French Panamá Canal Company. Davis, Robert 1993 Panamá Railroad. In Historical Dictionary of Colombia. Pp. 380. Metuchen, NJ: The Scarecrow Press.
