Summary: The Secretaria de Hacienda y Fomento offered to pay part of the country’s external debt by conceding property in perpetuity of the salt mines of Zipaquirá, Nemocón, Tausa Sesquilé y Gachetá to creditors. This document presents an analysis of the proposal and includes statistics concerning the prices of salt and its production in these mines.
Historical Notes: In 1850 the Colombian government decreed that church lands and other unentailed properties were to be expropriated by the nation and sold to help address the national debt.
