Summary: Pedro Ignacio de Castro Barros, a follower of the Jesuits, published an edited volume explaining the reasons for the re-establishment of the Catholic order in Nueva Granada in 1844. It includes the political rationale for their re-establishment, as well as their missionary projects and their agenda for education.
Historical Notes: The members of the Society of Jesus, a religious Catholic order of men, arrived in Nueva Granada in 1589 and were authorized to establish religious houses in 1602. In the following fifty years they founded houses, schools and missions across the nation. By 1767 they had thirteen schools including one university, the Universidad Javeriana. That same year they were expelled from Nueva Granada because the Spanish crown feared their political influence, their tendency to protect the Indians and their economic power. The order was allowed to return to Colombia in 1844, but was again expelled by a Liberal government in 1850. T.C. de Mosquera then brought them back in 1858 only to be expelled for a third time in 1861. They returned permanently under the government of Rafael Núñez in 1885. Davis, Robert 1993 Jesuits.
