Summary: Grice i Compañía provides guidelines for tobacco farmers in El Socorro, Santander in order to produce quality tobacco leaves for export by using seeds from Cuba and Ambalema. Grice i Compañía agrees to purchase tobacco produced under these standards.
Historical Notes: Colombia produced small amounts of tobacco from colonial times. There are records of tobacco exports as early as 1700. The national and international commerce of tobacco was controlled by the Colombian government by a monopoly that lasted from 1766 to 1850. The tobacco exports reached their peak in the 1860s and gradually tailed off until the “tobacco crisis” in 1887, during which the market prices dropped dramatically.
