Summary: This document concerns the lepers’ colony in Agua de Dios, located in the state of Cundinamarca. The locals contest the idea of building a new leper’s hospital; they believed that the current medical facilities could be repaired and its location was more favorable for patients’ recovery than the new proposed site.
Historical Notes: The city of Agua de Dios, Cundinamarca was founded in the 1870s as a lepers’ colony. Since the 18th century, lepers were forbidden in the cities and were isolated even from their families; their constitutional rights were also removed and the colony was subject to state surveillance by police. It was not until 1960 that patients suffering from leprosy became full citizens of Colombia. Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango 1920 Cubrimiento de "El Espectador" a los Leprosarios de Agua de Dios.
