Historical Notes: The Colombian Conservative Party was founded in 1849 with a statement of principles written by Mariano Ospina Rodríguez and José Eusebio Caro. The Conservative party tended to be closely tied to the Catholic Church, and supported a centralized government and the maintenance of a strong political and economic elite.
