Summary: J. Manuel Restrepo promotes here the cultivation of coffee. He argues that Colombian land is optimal for this profitable crop, and provides technical details for farming coffee at an industrial level.
Historical Notes: Colombia began to produce considerable amounts of coffee during the last decade of the 19th century. However, coffee production from 1900 to 1930 is considered the beginning of Colombian industrialization, together with the introduction of modern mining techniques and railroads. The coffee industry generated capital accumulation, promoted local manufacturing, the growth of a merchant class, and fiscal revenues coming from import tariffs.
