Summary: Jesuit prayer, likley distributed after the reintroduction of the order in 1858 and before their expulsion by Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera in 1861. This prayer mentions Antonio Herrán who served as Archbishop go Bogotá between 1854-1868. Herrán was a supporter of the Jesuits and campaigned for the order's reintroduction in 1858.
Historical Notes: As in many other liberalizing nations of the 18th and 19th Century, the Jesuits had a tumultuous relationship with the Colombian Government. The Jesuits were expelled under colonial rule in 1773, then brought back briefly in 1842 by the Conservative-led government after the War of the Supremes in order to educate indigenous peoples and restore moral order to society. This publication would have appeared shortly before resident José Hilario López later expelled the order again in 1850. Archbishop Antonio Herrán and other church leaders campaigned for the order's reintroduction in 1858. However, the order was only in Colombia three years before President T.C. de Mosquera expelled them yet again in 1861, as part of his anticlerical campaign. Salcedo Martínez, Jorge Enrique.
