Summary: The "poncho" artisans write in support of José María Obando, the Draconian Liberal candidate for President of New Granada. State that Obando supports working class people. Despite Obando's good qualities and determination, the Artisans fear that Conservatives will not vote for him, and their lack of support will lead to the election of the Radical Liberal Candidate Tomás de Herrera.
Historical Notes: At the time of writing, the Liberal Party was split into three fractions: the Radical Liberals, The Golgothas (young progressive liberals), and the Draconians (the old, liberal elite). José María Obando, the Draconian candidate, ran against Tomás de Herrera (Radical) and José de Obaldía (Golgotha). The Conservative Party did not present a candidate. Despite being the choice of the liberal elite, Obando had proven a defender of multiple class interests during his long political and military career. During the early years of New Granadanian independence, Obando fought against Simón Bolívar's centralist and authoritarian regime and supported Francisco de Paula Santader's more progressive and inclusive agenda. Obando was a dedicated member of the anti-slavery movement. He won the 1853 election by a landslide, proving his popular appeal. However, his support of the artisan class would later cost him the presidency. In 1854, tensions between the merchants (casacas) and artisans (ruanas) rose and General José María Melo led a coup against the Obando administration.
