Summary: History of the Image of Perpetual Help from the fifteenth century to the nineteenth century. The pamphlet also includes a prayer to be prayed during nine consecutive days.
Historical Notes: Catholicism was an element of cohesion, that brought together many people through religious feasts, and communal moments of oration. Devotees sometimes got together to worship saints or virgins, by honoring them with novenas, litanies, sermons or other types of prayers. Novenas and litanies, were particularly popular genres of publications that, because of their accessible price, and their practical size, allowed people to meet and share moments of contemplation. Novenas are a series of spiritual exercises or prayers, meant to be recited during nine consecutive days, or during a specific day for nine weeks in a row. In addition to orations, some novenas included the history of the image and devotion to the honored saint or virgin . Knowing the history of a saint was a didactic strategy that made saints examples of virtue, and allowed people to identify with their life stories and tribulations. (see for example, Luis R. Mantilla, “La Iglesia católica en Colombia: entre la tensión y el conflicto”, Credencial Historia 153, September 2002)
