Summary: A state decree declaring the military service mandatory from 1911 onwards. The 109 articles of the law stipulate the different rights and obligations of the positions that comprised the military.
Historical Notes: Since its independence, Colombia tried to create a modern, civilized nation. This process was neither simple, nor fast. Having a permanent, professional army was a sign of modernity during the nineteenth and tweentieth centuries. This law was conceived as one more step in transforming Colombia into a civilized nation.
