Historical Notes: Antonio Nariño (1760-1823) was one of the precursors of Colombian independence. He held several government positions during the colonial period. He was also a publisher and printer, and was prosecuted for publishing books with libertarian ideas. He was forced to leave New Granada, and remained in Europe from 1795 to 1797. He was appointed president of the country in 1811, but captured on 1814 by the Royalist forces. Then, he was taken to Cadiz, where he remained until 1820. He became Vice President of Colombia in 1821, and passed away in 1823.
