Historical Notes: Charitable associations existed throughout Latin America since the colonial period, and continued with their activities well into the nineteenth century. Moreover, some of them were created even after the Independence was achieved. The society of San Lázaro was but one of those that worked in Colombia in the early years of the twentieth century. Among its work was the funding of hospitals and nursing homes to take care of the ill and elderly. (see for example: Diana Obregón Torres, Batallas contra la lepra: estado medicina y ciencia en Colombia).
