Summary: A booklet that fervently defends Catholicism from liberal attacks, by claiming that the genuine liberty of mankind is within the Church, not outside of it.
Historical Notes: The second half of the nineteenth century was a time of quest for self-definition in most of Latin America, and Colombia was not the exception. For decades, Colombians negotiated, sometimes peacefully, sometimes by more violent means, the character that they wanted to imprint to the nation for the generations to come. The country debated between the liberal ideals and the conservative ways of living. Part of this discussion was also the role that the Catholic Church should, or should not, play within society. This pamphlet is an excellent source to study this key historical process in the formation of Colombia. (See for example: Michael LaRosa and Germán Mejía, Colombia: A Concise Contemporary History (Lanham: Rowman and Littlefield, 2012).
Donor Notes: Defends Catholicism against Liberalism, explaining that true liberty lay in the Church, not outside it. - J.L.H.
