Summary: An illustrated history of the Church of San Francisco of Bogotá, whose Works began in the 17th century. Includes six pictures of the altars and religious images within the church.
Historical Notes: Religion has been an integral part of Colombian life from the earliest days of Spanish rule. Although Colombia has had freedom of religion for more than a century, one cannot overstate the centrality of the Catholic Church in Colombia’s history. For over three hundred years, from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, Catholicism held a near monopoly over people’s consciences and souls. One of the first acts of Spanish colonizers was to create religious institutions. This pamphlet is a valuable source of this process of adaptation in which European institutions transplanted and transformed in the New World. [see for example: Luis R. Mantilla “La Iglesia católica en Colombia: entre la tensión y el conflicto”, Credencial Historia 153 (September 2002)]
