Historical Notes: Jorge Eliecer Gaitán Ayala was probably the most important Colombian politician of the 20th century. His assassination on 9 April, 1948 marked a watershed in the history of the country, beginning with waves of violence that would last for at least two decades, and that would leave a long-lasting imprint on Colombian culture, and its image across the globe. Gaitán held different political positions in the National congress and his hometwon Bogotá. He knew how to gather followers among the lower clases of the country, advocating for social reforms, and being faithful to his liberal principles. (See for example: Jorge Emilio Sierra Montoya. El Pensamiento Político de Jorge Eliecer Gaitán. Colombia: Plaza y Janés, 1997.)
