Summary: A presidential address to the Colombian people, in which Mariano Ospina defends his policies and remarks the challenges that the country faced at that moment.
Historical Notes: Between 1930 and 1946 liberals won the Colombian presidency successively. Their policies faced oposition among the conservative sectors of society, that find them disruptive. When in 1946 the conservatives regained power, all the accumulated tensions find its expression in a twenty-year period of crime and violence, simply known in Colombia as "La Violencia." This presidential address was delivered in the midst of this period of political sectarianism and ideological discrepancies that violently erupted in 1948 after the assassination of Jorge Eliecer Gaitán, leader of the liberal party. (See for example: Ricardo Arias Trujillo, Historia de Colombia contemporánea, 1920-2010, Bogotá, Universidad de los Andes, 2011).
Donor Notes: President Ospina Pérez in this radio address of 13 February, 1948, defended his efforts at bi-partisanship, noting rising cost of living and other challenges. - J.L.H.
