Historical Notes: Spanish botanist and mathematician, José Celestino Mutis served a prominent role in the academic development of scientific and natural discovery in nineteenth-century Colombia. Mutis studied the sciences, medicine, and botany at the Universidad de Sevilla in Spain and travelled to Colombia in 1760. Once in Colombia, Mutis explored botanical studies in detail and petitioned the king of Spain to sponsor a botanical expedition into Colombia to examine its flora and fauna. In 1783, the king approved the proposal, and Mutis led the expedition and framed its purpose around scientific and nature exploration. The Real Expedición Botánica, or the Royal Botanical Expedition, explored and recorded information about various climates, landscapes, plants and flowers, and river systems across the region.
