Historical Notes: This work was completed by Francisco Jose de Caldas, a naturalist and scientific inventor who conducted botanical expeditions with Jose Celestino Mutis and Alexander von Humboldt. Caldas was eventually involved in the wars of independence and later executed by the Spanish American Reconquista in 1816.
