Summary: This document includes the principal pledge filed in a suit by Pedro Maria Carreño, lawyer for the company Sociedad de Cortissoz, Correa & C. against the Colombian government. The company won the concession for the exploitation of sea salt in the Atlantic coast of Colombia. However, according to the complaint, in 1921 the government failed to comply with the terms of the contract. The lawsuit demands that the government follow the contract agreement. The document includes the response from the Colombian government to Cortissoz, Correa & C. by Miguel Arroyo Díez.
Historical Notes: In the early twentieth century, the lack of adequate transportation both internally and externally, created problems in the exploitation of sea salt on the Atlantic coast. Additionally, there were frequent clashes with the local indigenous communities that claimed rights over the exploitation of salt (1921). The companies profited from the cheap labor of locals without providing steady employment. At the beginning of the twentieth century Cortissoz Correa & C. was the principal company commercializing sea salt in Colombia, founded in Barranquilla in 1914. In 1914, José Abuchaibe also entered the business of sea salt as a serious competitor. Both companies fought over the control of transportation of salt by land and sea, and strove to form connections and obtain concessions from local indigenous communities in the Guajira region who often opposed and boycotted production. During the 1920s the Colombian government decided to reclaim its monopoly over the exploitation and commercialization of sea salt (2013). Gutiérrez, Rufino 1921 Las Salinas Marítimas.
