Summary: Here Archbishop Manuel José Mosquera presents an updated version of the catechism to be used in the archdiocese of Bogotá. In an extensive introduction he emphasizes the necessity for and the advantages of Catholic instruction of children in Nueva Granada.
Historical Notes: In the first decades following Independence, the Catholic Church was in constant danger of losing its former colonial power. Liberal governments introduced reforms in order to control the Church’s property, income, and its role in formal education. Nevertheless, the state never considered suppressing religious practice itself, since the nation was deeply religious. The main field of action that the Church was left with was its social function as a custodian of moral values. Thus, all its efforts during this time were focused on maintaining the loyalty of the parishioners and the promotion of the Catholic faith through the instruction of Christian moral values (428).
