Summary: This document provides guidelines for those interested in the study of Spanish literature. The author points to gaps in the academic instruction of literature in Colombia, such as the lack of grammar manuals.
Historical Notes: Under the presidency of Mariano Ospina Rodríguez (1857-61) there were several changes made in the education system in order to promote “the useful science.” Ospina Rodríguez believed that citizens should receive an education with a balance of both humanistic and technical knowledge. In addition, he promoted the development of programs that would teach proper grammar and orthography and help to develop good public speaking and writing skills (261). Donor Notes: One of the very first bibliographical efforts on the 19th century Colombia. This work studies, and annotates, the various Spanish grammars employed from the late 18th century to then in the schools and colleges in Colombia. - J.L.H.
