Summary: In this document the president of the Santa Marta Steamship Company denounces the false accusations that rival entrepreneurs made to the Cámara de Representantes concerning contracts related to steamboat transportation on the Magdalena River.
Historical Notes: The Santa Marta Steamship Company was founded in 1846 and supported by the government of Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera. The company opened for business in 1847 with three steamboats: “Magdalena,” “Nueva Granada” y “Manzanares” and their transportation service functioned until 1854. Before the existence of the Santa Marta Steamship Company there were several unsuccessful attempts by other entrepreneurs to establish commercial service on the Magadalena River. They failed principally because they purchased steamboats unsuited to the Magdalena River’s depth and flow. Patiño, Victor Manuel 1993 Navegación al Vapor.
