Historical Notes: The radical reforms to the education system in the 1870s brought forth normal schools. This institution was in charge of training teachers for the nation, and such schools were opened in all the provincial capital cities. In 1872 the central government commissioned a group of German specialists in pedagogy to help with the organization of the normal schools. They were often received with hostility because they were Protestant. By the end of 1872 the German mission had organized normal schools for men and women throughout Colombia.
