Summary: Athanase Airiau proposes a “financial salvation” for the construction of the Panamá Canal. It includes a detailed explanation concerning the plan for shareholder investment in the Canal project. His financial solution is based on the creation of a Franco-Colombian association. The second part of the document includes information regarding the rights of the Franco-Colombian association over the colonization of Colombian territory which, according to Airiau, is stipulated in the association’s agreements. Airiau explains the corporate principles of the Franco-Colombian association and its advantages for the Colombian Republic.
Historical Notes: The Universal Company of the Inter-oceanic Panama Canal was founded in France in 1879 as a result of the concession granted to Lucien Napoleon Bonaparte Wyse in 1878. Canal construction was initiated in 1883, but by 1888 the company had declared bankruptcy due to alleged corruption in the management of funds for the project. In 1910 the company was granted an extension, but never completed the project. Davis, Robert 1993 Compagnie Universelle du Canal Inter-Oceanique de Panama. In Historical Dictionary of Colombia.
