Summary: The state of Boyacá constitutional charter was written after the central government declared that each state in Nueva Granada would be sovereign. This constitution stated that Boyacá depended on the central government for international relations, military service, credit, national taxes, public land issues, naturalization of foreigners, and official currency and measurement systems. The constitution includes the rights of citizens and the organization of the legislative, executive and judiciary.
Historical Notes: Boyacá is located in eastern Colombia. The department was first established by the constitution of 1881. Its size was reduced when in the 20th century Arauca (1911) and Casanare (1973) became separate states. Even though a new centralist constitution was approved for Nueva Granada in 1843, each state would retain its own constitution and manage its resources with relative independence.
