Summary: Government functionaries of the State of Cauca here propose to the President of Colombia, Eustorgio Salgar Moreno, the development of the navigation system on the Cauca River. An association of local investors offers to support the venture in conjunction with the central government. The authors provide a summary of the commercial benefits of connecting locals with other provinces.
Historical Notes: Historical details concerning the development of the Cauca River navigation are scarce. Its history can be traced to the Caldas steamboat, the first boat that failed to navigate the river, and Carl Simmonds, a German businessman in the Cauca Valley. Simmonds joined the efforts of the “Sociedad de navegación del Río Cauca” to enter into contract for the construction of a custom-made steamship suitable for the Cauca River’s physical requirements. It was not until 1888 that the first steamboat successfully navigated the Cauca River and then it was only navigable in the Cauca Valley segment. Patiño, Germán 1989 C.H. Simmonds y los comienzos de la navegación a vapor en el alto Cauca (primera parte). Boletín cultural y bibliográfico XXVI (21).
Donor Notes: An ambitious proposal to put steamers on Cauca River, close to the limits of the state. Largely Conservative sponsored. - J.L.H.
