Summary: The Compañía de Navegación y Diligencias del Cauca here publishes its statutes. The Compañía was established by local entrepreneurs who wanted to set up commercial navigation via steamboats in the Cauca River using private funds and central government contributions.
Historical Notes: Historical details concerning the development of the Cauca River navigation are scarce. Its history can be traced to the Caldas steamboat, the first boat that failed to navigate the river, and Carl Simmonds, a German businessman in the Cauca Valley. Simmonds joined the efforts of the “Sociedad de Navegación del Río Cauca” to enter into a contract for the construction of a custom-made steamship suitable for the Cauca River’s physical requirements. It was not until 1888 that the first steamboat successfully navigated the Cauca River and then it was only navigable in the Cauca Valley segment. Patiño, Germán 1989 C.H.
