Summary: Father Evasio Rabagliati appeals here to parishioners and the members of the San Lázaro Society in Bogotá for monetary help for those who suffer from leprosy and need to be placed in Agua de Dios Cundinamarca. He includes the budget needed to run the lepers’ colony.
Historical Notes: The city of Agua de Dios, Cundinamarca was founded in the 1870s as a lepers’ colony. Since the 18th century, lepers were forbidden in the cities and were isolated even from their families; their constitutional rights were also removed and the colony was subject to state surveillance by police. It was not until 1960 that patients suffering from leprosy became full citizens of Colombia. Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango 1920 Cubrimiento de "El Espectador" a los Leprosarios de Agua de Dios. Bogotá: Banco de la República.
Donor Notes: The Salesian priest advocates the total isolation of lepers from society, and solicits the charity of his listeners in the San Lázaro Society. - J.L.H.
