Historical Notes: The Department of Magdalena is located along the Colombian Caribbean coast on the lower Magdalena River. During the colonial period the region was known as the province of Santa Marta. Magdalena became the state of Magdalena in 1857, formed by the departments of El Banco, Padilla, Santa Marta, Tenerife, and Valledupar, and in 1886, the state of Magdalena became the Department of Magdalena. Its size was subsequently reduced when the departments of Guajira and Cesar separated from Magdalena. Davis, Robert 1993 Magdalena. In Historical Dictionary of Colombia. Pp. 313.
