Summary: The government of the Estados Unidos de Colombia here dictates the regulations for the National Archives. It includes instructions for filing according to historical periods, destroying documents, as well as the creation of a library for consulting them.
Historical Notes: In 1826 the government attempted to organize the national documents for first time by dividing the documents into three sections: pending business, secret archives, and concluded business. However, it was not until the mid-1800s that the national archive took shape. Under the direction of Manuel Briceño the documents were divided into those relating to diplomacy, the political period of centralization and the federal period. Each of these divisions was further classified by the entity that generated the document. Tovar, Mauricio 1998 Archivo General de la Nación.
