Summary: A letter signed by hundreds of people in support of the Company of Jesus (Jesuits) for their good work in Colombia. Letter mentions rumors that the Jesuits may soon be expelled.
Historical Notes: As in many other liberalizing nations of the 18th and 19th Century, the Jesuits had a tumultuous relationship with the Colombian government. The Jesuits were expelled under colonial rule in 1773, then brought back briefly in 1842 by the Conservative-led government after the War of the Supremes in order to educate indigenous peoples and restore moral order to society. President José Hilario López later expelled them again in 1850. Salcedo Martínez, Jorge Enrique. Las vicisitudes de los jesuitas en Colombia: hacia una historia de la Compañía de Jesús, 1844-1861.
