Historical Notes: Steamships were first introduced to Colombia in 1820. Steamships were essential to Colombia's nineteenth century economy for transporting agricultural and mining products both within Colombia's river system, and between Colombia and neighboring countries. Steamships also carried passengers. Like the railroad system, British companies invested in the South American steamship enterprise.
