Summary: Manuel Antonio Arboleda, leader of a battalion in Estancia, denounces the human and economic costs of the war after the José María Melo coup. At the end of the letter, he suggests that the government spend 10, 000 pesos on public services such as education.
Historical Notes: Manuel Antonio Arboleda, a native of Popayán was known for his humanitarian nature. During the Melo coup and 1854 Civil War, he tried, unsuccessfully, to prevent bloodshed in Popayán. Arboleda dedicated himself to agriculture and the study of science.
