Summary: Juan N. Cadavid, the canon of the Santa Iglesia Catedral de Popayán, writes to "The Liberators of the South" about the terrible state of Colombia as the Liberals persecute the Catholic Church and Catholic religion.
Historical Notes: Between 1876-1877, the Conservative Party started a short civil war when it attempted to overthrow the Liberal-dominated government, led by the Radical Liberals who opposed the political power of the Catholic Church. At the time of writing, the country was in turmoil, and religious leaders like Cadavid would likely have supported the Conservative overthrow of the Liberals.
