Summary: In this letter, a group of anonymous Catholic women praises Sr. Dr. Manuel Fernández Saavedra for his defense of the church in the wake of Tomás Cipriano de Mosuera's anti-clerical campaign. They mention that although none of them are personally involved in politics, they appreciate political men who defend religion.
Historical Notes: Manuel Fernández Saavedra's response to this letter is also in the collection ("A unas señoras católicas, record #461). Fernández Saavedra was a canon known for his bombastic speeches and publications. He was best known for the "El arzobispo ante la Nación" published on 1852, in which he accused Manuel José Mosquera of being appointed Archbishop only because of his brother Tómas Cipriano de Mosquera's political connections. He was one of T.C. Mosquera's most vocal critics, especially in the early 1860's when Mosquera pursued an anti-clerical campaign, which included threatening the church's collection of taxes and expelling the Jesuits.
