Historical Notes: As in many other liberalizing nations of the 18th and 19th century, the Jesuits had a tumultuous relationship with the Colombian government. The Jesuits were expelled under colonial rule in 1773, then brought back briefly in 1842 by the Conservative-led government after the War of the Supremes in order to educate indigenous peoples and restore moral order to society. This publication would have appeared before President José Hilario López later expelled the order again in 1850. The dedication mentions Archbishop José Manuel Mosquera who support the order.
