Summary: A group of women in Popayán write a response to a publication called "maldición de Dios," calling it libel for slandering the Company of Jesus (The Jesuits). In poetic verse, they call the enemies of the Jesuits adulters and imps. They also state the friends of the Jesuits are true believers who want peace.
Historical Notes: As in many other liberalizing nations of the 18th and 19th Century, the Jesuits had a tumultuous relationship with the Colombian Government. The Jesuits were expelled under colonial rule in 1773, then brought back briefly in 1842 by the Conservative-led government after the War of the Supremes in order to educate indigenous peoples and restore moral order to society. President José Hilario López later expelled them again in 1850. The people of Popayán welcomed the Jesuits and wrote to support them when López first considered their expulsion. The largest Jesuit mission school was located in Popayán. Salcedo Martínez, Jorge Enrique. Las vicisitudes de los jesuitas en Colombia: hacia una historia de la Compañía de Jesús, 1844-1861.
