Historical Notes: The Artisans' Society formed in 1847 at the same time as other workers' organizations. Compromised of primarily middle class urban workers and businessmen, the Society became an important force in Colombian politics, supporting the nascent Liberal Party during elections. Many Liberal Party politicians were also members of the Society. At the time of writing, Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera led a liberal rebellion (1860-1862) that successfully overthrew the Conservative government in power.
