Summary: Report form French engineers on project to build canal on Ismuth of Darien (Panama).
Historical Notes: This document comes from the survey period of the French attempt to build a canal. The French were the first to attempt to build a shipping canal through Panama to connect the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. After both financial and engineering failures, as well as uncontrollable outbreaks of malaria and yellow fever that claimed the lives of many workers, the French team abandoned the project in 1889. The United States took over the project and opened the first lock in 1914. Maurer, Noel, and Carlos Yu. The Big Ditch. Princeton, Princeton University Press, 2011.
