Summary: Camilo Viga defends General Tómas Cipriano de Mosquera from charges against him by Rafael Arboleda Mosquera and the Mosquera family. Viga accuses the Arboleda family of previously plotting Mosquera's death. He reproduces details from several cases brought against Mosquera for corruption by the Arboledas, and shows why they are false accusations. He also mentions the famiiial ties between the Mosquera and Arboleda familiies.
Historical Notes: The Mosquera and Arboleda families were two of the most important aristocratic families in Popayán. Tomás C. de Moquera's mother was an Arboleda. As was customary at the time, aristocrats often married their cousins, such that the Arboledas and Mosqueras were joined several times via marriage. Many of the Arboledas were Conservatives, while the Mosqueras were generally Liberals. Thus, in several political conflicts, including the rebellion led by T.C. de Mosquera from 1860-1862, the extended family fought against each other on different sides of what became a Liberal-Conservative civil war.
