Historical Notes: As in many other liberalizing nations of the 18th and 19th Century, the Jesuits had a tumultuous relationship with the Colombian Government. The Jesuits were expelled under colonial rule in 1773, then brought back briefly in 1842 by the Conservative-led government after the War of the Supremes in order to educate indigenous peoples and restore moral order to society. President José Hilario López later expelled them again in 1850.es.
