Summary: José Maria Melo writes from the San Bartolomé prison to defend his dictatorship and denounce his treatment by the current administration. Melo claims he is being punished for the political crimes of many.
Historical Notes: José María Melo staged a coup in 1854 supported by artisans and some liberals in which he successfully overthrew José María Obando and instilling a dictatorship.
