Historical Notes: The Regeneration movement (1869-1900) was most active between 1877 and 1889. During Rafael Núñez' first presidency (1880-1882), the Colombian government reestablished a relationship with Spain, mended relations with the Catholic Church, and expanded the country's infrastructure. These reforms were only a hint of what was to come during Núñez' second presidency (1884-1891), in which he made far-reaching structural reforms including the 1886 centralist constitution that would remain in effect until 1991, establishing the Nationalist Party, and renaming The United States of Colombia the Republic of Colombia.
