Summary: Nine charges against the a Colombian official and a contractor of the Girardot Railway, accusing them of illicit use of funding for the work.
Historical Notes: Colombia's transport system developed at the end of the nineteenth century with the construction of railways. The aim of this network was to connect different regions with the Magdalena River, that in turn served to connect the interior with sea ports. The rail system contributed to the development of the cofee industry, and the growth of this industry provided the capital to expand the rail system. However, the construction of railways in Colombia was a difficult task since the beginning. On the one hand, the geography of the country made difficult the construction of railways. On the other hand, the lack of funding, and corruption made the process even harder. (Henderson, James D. Modernization in Colombia: The Laureano Gómez Years, 1889-1965. Gainesville, Fl.: University Press of Florida, 2001).
Donor Notes: Gómez takes on a contractor for the Girardot Railway, whom he accuses of fraud-greed. - J.L.H.
