Catholicism unified a state that was trying to construct a nation" [Michael LaRosa and Germán Mejía, Colombia: A Concise Contemporary History (Lanham: Rowman and Littlefield, 2012), p. 63]. The collective reading of religious texts such as novenas and sermons played a key roled in the creation of a common identity. Together, the Catholic Church and the emerging Colombian state promoted a national identity centered on the Catholic faith, and the reading of novenas helped reinforce this sense of belonging.
