Summary: A series of three short prayers honoring Jesús, Mary and Joseph, issued jointly
Historical Notes: Having a society with a common set of beliefs and religious practices was conducive to the creation of a national identity in nineteenth-century Colombia. The collective reading of novenas, sermons and other religious texts contributed to reinforcing a sense of belonging centered on Catholicism that both the Colombian state and the Catholic church promoted from the top. As LaRosa and Mejía have put it "Catholicism emerged as a central force in building a common identity for Colombians during the formative years of the nineteenth century and well into the twentieth. Catholicism unified a state that was trying to construct a nation" [Michael LaRosa and Germán Mejía, Colombia: A Concise Contemporary History (Lanham: Rowman and Littlefield, 2012), p. 63].
